The Lincoln Academy of Learning and Teaching (LALT), has announced a series of teaching and learning events to take place over the coming term.

These events are unique in offering discussion around university practice with senior teaching and learning figures, combined with practical advice and tips from current teaching staff in various disciplines.

What every new researcher needs to know #vitaechat

Whatever your situation, taking a professional approach to your development from the start can help make the path smoother, and enable you to be more successful in the long run.

During your doctoral or postdoctoral research you will push the boundary of current knowledge, increasingly becoming an expert in your field. However, being a professional researcher involves not just writing a thesis or papers, but also developing your skills and building your profile. So how do you make the most of your PhD or postdoc and prepare yourself for what’s coming next?

Our moderator will be joined by a panel of researchers at various stages of their careers to discuss what they wish they’d known when starting out. The #vitaechat will help you to answer questions such as:

  • As a PhD researcher, or postdoc in a new role, which first steps should I take?
  • How do I manage my relationship with my supervisor or PI?
  • How do I plan my research project and what are the typical milestones?
  • What kind of development opportunities will I have, and how do I prioritise them?
  • When should I start thinking about my post-PhD career?

Questionnaires – whether administered electronically or by more traditional means – are a widely used research method, including in the collection of qualitative data. This workshop considers the questionnaire, its context, and the kinds of data the questionnaire is capable of capturing. We will then explore the questionnaire structure: its layout and appearance; the ordering and types of question posed; as well as approaches to maximising response rates and ensuring validity in the data collected. Getting Your First Article Published

Much importance is now attached to ‘getting published’. This session offers some practical guidance for publishing your research.
The workshop begins by asking why publish – what are the reasons for publishing and what are the benefits of doing so? Attention will then turn to journal selection and where to publish, before the question of how to get published is addressed. Here consideration will be given to the writing stage – the steps involved and the need to think about the journal’s readership. The subjects of article structuring and referencing, as well as preparing the final manuscript, will also be examined.
In the second part of the session the focus will turn to the submission process, including the writing of covering letters, before consideration is given to dealing with feedback, including handling revisions and managing possible rejections. The session will finish with some recommendations from those ‘in the know’, amongst them journal editors, as well as suggestions on the intermediate steps that can be taken to support the successful submission of your first article, including writing for newsletters and contributing to blogs and e-bulletins.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • Explored the reasons and motivations for publishing
  • Gained an understanding of the stages involved in preparing a paper for publication
  • Considered how to structure an academic article
  • Acquired an understanding of the submission process and how to handle feedback
  • Considered a range of recommendations for success in getting published.
